There is nothing like an odd smell by the stove to make one wonder if it is cause for alarm. Or perhaps you are concerned over the possibility of a gas leak you can not see and what that might do to your family. You would be better off knowing what to put your eye on so as to head off trouble before it becomes something more.
That is where we come in. As a family run, locally owned concern in Yakima, All Valley Plumbing, LLC has been of service to the homeowners and businesses of Central Washington since Joe Ross put us in business in 2023. With his ten years or more in the trade, our staff is well versed in identifying and putting an end to problems.
It is all too easy to let a gas line leak go by unnoticed until it is hazardous. Given that you rely on gas for everything from hot water to cooking and heating, there are many places in a home for a leak to occur. But for the most part your home will put up some warning signs if you are looking for them.
The Smell You Should Never Ignore
In its pure form natural gas has no odor. The companies put mercaptan in it for a reason: to make detection of a leak a simple matter. It is the kind of thing one puts down to sulfur or rotten eggs.
You should not be casual about it if you put your nose to that scent in the house, particularly in the vicinity of appliances or gas lines. A whiff of it is enough to tell you gas is getting out where it ought not to be.
Sounds That Point to Trouble
On occasion you will hear a leak before you smell it. An ill-fitting or broken line will make noises that are out of the ordinary.
Be on the lookout for:
- Hissing in the area of a pipe or appliance
- A whistle from the fittings and connections
- Something blowing near the meter
- Unexplained noise of any sort with the appliances off
If you can make no sense of what you are hearing, get your family out and call for assistance without delay.
Physical Signs Around the Home
A little observation inside and out can turn up the visible evidence of a leak.
Some things to note are:
- Vegetation that has turned to dust or discolouration
- Plants in once healthy patches that are no longer
- Bubbles in a puddle outside
- Dirt being blown up from the ground in the path of a gas line
- Unaccountable fog or condensation on an appliance
With a buried line an outdoor leak is easily passed over, but nature has a way of showing you when gas is escaping.
How a Leak Can Affect Your Health
The people and pets in the house are at risk as much as the home itself. As gas accumulates it will displace oxygen and you may experience any number of symptoms.
These include:
- Headaches or dizziness
- Nausea for no apparent reason
- Lightheadedness or fatigue
- Shortness of breath
Should you find your family is in better shape once you are outdoors, take that as a sure indication of an indoor problem.
What to Do If You Suspect a Leak
They can become serious in short order. To ensure the safety of all, do not be tempted to switch an appliance or light on and off, or use anything that might produce a spark. Make your way out of the home with your pets and family in tow and phone for help from a safe spot. Leave the job of finding and mending a gas line to a pro.
